These receptions however, positioning Lagerlöf in relation to the literary tradition, contemporary literature, and as a national or provincial writer, are not simply written in praise of a great author, but reveals a spectrum of culturally encoded aesthetic and moral judgements. The prize can be described as a consecration of the author (Casanova 2009). The author herself and her work, Swedish literature and the country of Sweden were introduced to new audiences in different language areas, mainly through articles in the press, but later also in book format. Before the Nobel Prize, Lagerlöf’s texts were already translated to many European languages, but the award signified the start of a new stage in her European reception. Selma Lagerlöf’s Nobel Prize in 1909 constituted a breakthrough for women authors but also brought a renewed interest in Swedish literature.
